Bocce is a game that originated in Italy.  Bocce is often played on a court with short walls and a firm or packed surface, but can be played on any level, reasonably uniform surface such as grass.  The basic principle of the sport is to roll a bocce ball closest to the target ball, which is called a pallina.  Bocce ball has grown in popularity over the last few years.  It can be a very competitive game with skilled athletes.  But it also is a lot of fun.

Bocce as a Special Olympics sport provides people with special needs the opportunity to have social contact, develop physically and to gain self-confidence. In Special Olympics, Bocce is played on grass athletic fields in a rectangular court made of strips of vinyl.  The matches are played between two teams with two competitors on each team.  In the traditional version, each team consists of 2 athletes while in Unified bocce, each team consist of one athlete and one unified partner.
