Special Olympics Equestrian competition allows athletes to compete on horseback in several events such as but not limited to barrel racing, pole bending, trail course, and showmanship at halter in area compeition and at the state level.  Athletes are provided riding lessonsto prepare them to compete at one of three levels; at a walk, at a trot, or at a lope.  Riders can be assisted by side walkers and horse handlers if necessary.  It is best if rider has their own horse, but arrangements can be made for riders to obtain a horse to use in this type of competition through leases or loans.

The Rio Rancho equestrian team is the Curley Key Riders.  The team practices in the west mesa off of Southern Boulevard just outside the city limits.  For more information please contact the Curley Key Riders Director/Head Coach at 507-7126.
